We had an interesting New Year weekend at Lake Malawi in Manguchi, about 6 hrs from Lilongwe. Drove in two cars on real good roads. We had lunch at a terrific pottery center, ate outdoors and toured the shop. I am reminded of my school visit to a simple pottery shop in Milton when I was in about the sixth grade.

On Sunday we take a five day guided tour, arranged with Brian's help, to Victoria Falls, one of the seven wonders of the world, located in Zambia and Zimbabwe, then back to Lilongwe for a day and then off to safari in Zambia. We met a PCV and his PCV girl friend at another wood carving shop connected to a Catholic mission on our return from the lake. They, with his parents from Idaho and his siblings, had just returned fron safari and they raved about the experience. The widlife seemed to be everywhere and in great numbers and variety.

We have a clear impression that Brian and Mike and family are happy and thriving here. It is also clear that both Brian and Mike are held in very high esteem and that they are a wonderful team for the Peace Corps and America. We couldn't be more pleased for them.

Peggy here, this is such a totally different place in every way that it is hard to describe or imagine unless you have been here. On that trip to the beach/lake we went down one dirt road for about 70 km that looked like life maybe 1000 years ago. People doing subsistence farming, raising their own food, thatch or clay huts with straw roofs, children herding goats and cows, women carrying hoes on their head, (their balance is amazing because they have sharp hoes, umbrellas, tools on their heads and babies on their backs!)

Yes, Brian and Mike are wonderful, extremely patient with everyone as well as being full of fun. they have some good friends and there is often someone at our table.
