Vanity Fair - Africa - We have all pretty much read this one cover to cover. We got the one with Desmond Tutu and Brad Pitt, and lucky Brian and Mike, their subscription had Condaleeza and W on the cover.

Don't Lets Got to the Dogs Tonight - Alexandra Fuller - Chris started this just before going, then finished it off in Capetown

The Long Walk to Freedom - Nelson Mandela's autobiography. Liz picked this up after visiting Robben Island. We call it the Long Book to Freedom. As we pack to head home she is still in the 1950's. It is a good story of the life of Nelson Mandela.

Madiba - We got this for Angela, the story of Nelson Mandela for kids. A good overview of his life and times.

Africa - Biography of a Continent - John Reader - Similar in heft to the long book to freedom. A fascinating read, but overwhelming in its length. Chris started with the chapter on the Africaaners while in South Africa and covered about two hundred pages during the trip.

National Geographic has a couple of editions about africa from recent years. Chris read most of one of them before travelling.

The short reads are pretty good for getting a big context on the situation, but the longer books cover topics in greater depth.
